Consultation closes this Sunday
There are just a few days left to make a submission on our draft advice to government on the future of climate action in Aotearoa. Make sure you take the opportunity to have your say by 11.59pm, Sunday 28 March 2021 and join the 7,000 other Kiwis that have contributed to our work.
“It’s been great to see that New Zealanders from all walks of life have taken the opportunity to have their say on the draft advice,” Chief Executive Jo Hendy says.
"I’ve been working in climate policy for 20 years and I have never seen this level of impetus and engagement from so many New Zealanders. The conversation has been very diverse - different viewpoints, young people, parents, small business owners, iwi/Māori, community, and a raft of different sectors and interest groups. It has been a busy and productive eight weeks.”
"This is a pivotal time in the response to climate change here in Aotearoa, and we are grateful to all of the New Zealanders who are engaging with the process.”
The Commission has started reviewing submissions. The next step is to finish processing the feedback and determine what changes to incorporate into the final advice. Processing feedback will include re-running our models, updating our recommendations and advice, and updating the supporting information in our reports.
“We have been clear that we are open to making changes in light of what we have heard through consultation. This is a pivotal time in Aotearoa’s response to climate change and we are grateful to all of the New Zealanders who are engaging with the process,” Jo says.

Next steps:
- Midnight 28 March 2021: deadline for submissions
- 31 May: final package of advice due to Government, as per the Act within 10 working days. The Minister is responsible for releasing the advice.
- 28 June: final advice published on Commission’s website, as per the Act
- 31 December: the Government (and implementing agencies) have until the end of the year to decide, and let Aotearoa know, which parts of our advice they will act on. This may include running their own consultations.
- 2022: we will begin a new work programme to monitor how our advice is implemented, including how well Aotearoa is tracking to meet the 2050 target.
